Lake Turkana Expeditions
AASC 9; 8- Days Turkana via Chalbi
Day 1, Mt. Kenya, Samburu
Departing Nairobi, head north and drive past Africa's second highest
mountain, Mt. Kenya, to our stunning camp in Samburu Game Reserve
under a canopy of trees on the edge of Uaso Nyiro River. An idyllic
setting for your first night out under the African stars.
Day 2, Samburu Game Reserve
Samburu is located in Kenya's hot and arid northern region, and
when you see a camel train walking single file along a dry riverbed,
you know you're in a pretty parched area! But its the habitat of
more unusual animals such as reticulated giraffe and Gravy's zebra,
and under the palms along the river bask hippos and crocs.
Day 3 - 4, Marsabit, Kalacha
We join the famous Trans-Africa Highway, once the only route from
southern Africa to the Middle East in bygone days. In Marsabit National
Park explore the steep hills and crater lakes where you may see
elephant, buffalo and antelope. The following day travel to the
stark and eerie Chalbi Desert with its ochre plains and teasing
mirages, and camp at Kalacha, a community-run camp in a lush oasis
- an excellent opportunity to stay on the edge of a stunning desert
surrounded by the local culture.

Day 5 - 6, Lake Turkana
Stretching toward the Ethiopian border, Lake Turkana, or the 'Jade
Sea' is remote, mystical, bleak, forbidding and one of the most
breathtakingly beautiful destinations in Africa. The water constantly
changes colour as the desert light shines down at different angles,
and seeing the lake offers a welcome respite from the vast desert
we have just crossed. Spend time here relaxing, taking a short boat
cruise on the brilliantly blue water, and meeting the colorful Tarzana
people who have lived next to the lake for centuries and have adapted
to the harsh environment.
Day 7 - 8, Maralal, Nairobi
Back towards Nairobi we journey through deserts, forests, and volcanic
lands to return to Kenya's capital, Nairobi.
